Afrika Vuka Week 2026: Empowering local women's in green and sustainable energy access & production

Rural Women's Empowerment in Energy Access and Production, Green Entrepreneurship, Goma, DRC

As access to energy becomes increasingly difficult, local women in Mugunga have come together to develop their own knowledge in the local production of eco-friendly briquettes, which constitute a local, ecological, and sustainable alternative energy source.

During the "Afrika Vuka Week" campaign, under the "Affordable Energy for All" initiative, these women were able to develop their skills in producing eco-friendly briquettes in order to avoid and limit human pressure within Virunga National Park through deforestation and the use of firewood, considered a fossil fuel.

These women, often deprived of basic necessities and lacking access to electricity in their homes, received training, skills, and tools for local renewable energy production, including the production of eco-friendly briquettes for clean cooking and energy generation.

" _Since then, the local women of Mugunga have lacked electricity in their homes, and this situation persists. That's why we are so grateful for this training you have just provided, as we believe it will enable us to produce these eco-friendly briquettes ourselves, which will benefit our local economy and be used for clean cooking "

Francisca Faida, leader of the local women of Mugunga

"There is no more time; we must act quickly in the face of this energy insecurity in our country, and women must be at the heart of this."

Prisca Simbi, young leader
